Everton boss Rafael Benitez speaking to BBC Sport: "We know the FA Cup is massive and you could see the atmosphere today.

"We started by making things difficult for ourselves but the reaction of the team, as usual, was quite good which means that the players care.

"You have to praise all of the players for sure but Demarai Gray played through pain until we had to make the substitution because he was working so hard and Andros Townsend is injured and he’s playing because he wants to help the team. That is the spirit you are expecting from our players.

"It’s always important to win and to win in the cup is massive. I think the way that we played we could have scored three or four goals to finish the game in the first half but we didn’t do it and we had to suffer until the end."

And FA Cup holders Leicester City are also safely through following a 4-1 win over fellow Premier League side Watford.

Chelsea made sure there would be no shocks at Stamford Bridge, winning 5-1 against National League side Chesterfield.

Everton match-winner Andros Townsend speaking to BBC Sport: "It meant a hell of a lot. Everyone who knows me knows I’m a terrible patient when I’m injured and I needed to get back on the pitch as soon as possible.

"Thanks to the help of the medical team and the manager I was able to do that today safely and help the team into the next round of the cup.

"One thing we can say is that we are still fighting. It seems in every game this season we’ve given ourselves a lot of work to do – we’ve either gone behind early or conceded a goal at some point.

"But this team has character and when we cut the silly mistakes out early in the game hopefully we can go on a run and pick up some points in the league.

"I think this club needs to get into Europe, whether it be through the league or the cup. Unfortunately we went out early doors in the League Cup but listen we’re getting players back, we’ve got a big squad and hopefully we can go far in this competition."

This was the winning goal for Plymouth as Ryan Law delighted 2,800 of his club's travelling fans with a cup upset at Birmingham City.

Not many people will be enjoying their Saturday more than Emiliano Marcondes, after his hat-trick ensured Championship leaders Bournemouth will also be in tomorrow's fourth round draw.

Everton have given Rafa Benitez the job, and the fans might not agree, but they have to try and stick with it.

The club have backed him with two players in the window which weren't cheap but it won't be a quick fix at Everton.

Southampton’s Nathan Redmond has been directly involved in eight goals in his last eight appearances in the FA Cup, scoring six and assisting two.

Shane Long both scored and assisted in a single game for Southampton for the first time since April 2016, against Aston Villa in the Premier League, with both his goal and his assist today coming in extra-time.

Championship side Birmingham City's 1-0 defeat to League One's Plymouth is the first time they have lost to lower league opposition in the FA Cup since a 2-1 third round loss in January 2008, when they were a Premier League side against League One Huddersfield.

Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse, speaking to BBC Sport, says: "It was tough. We had a really good start, we got ahead with a well-taken goal but the sending off changed the game and we had to adapt.

"Credit to the lads, everyone stuck in against a good team. We rode our luck but I think we deserved the win. This is a competition we want to do well in."

Everton goalscorer Demarai Gray speaking to BBC Sport: "To concede so early wasn’t helpful but we responded well. It’s FA Cup football and I’m sure everyone watching enjoyed it but, for us, it was important to get the win.

"We had to dig deep but we’re happy to be in the hat.

"We knew it would be difficult coming here, we are an experienced side and we know how the FA Cup is.

"Hull put up a very good fight, credit to them but we showed character and I’m happy we got the win.

"It’s important, it would be nice to go on a good cup run and push as far as we can. For the fans it’s a great competition but we have to take it game by game and today was important, not only for the cup but for team morale and we’ve got to push on now."

Chesterfield manager James Rowe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was very special. Great to get the goal at the end for us and the ers and what a proud day to be a Spireite. Half time was about recollecting our thoughts because the line ups surprised us a bit. It was a great lesson for us on the transitions, and we focussed at half time and drew the second half 1-1."

On Chelsea's line up: "It was exciting to take the line up back into the dressing room and a pinch me moment for some of the players. The most important thing was that we didn't let the day slip away from us and we didn't, the subs included, everyone on the pitch gave their all and that is all you can ask when there is such a gulf in technical quality and tactical quality. I'm so proud of the second half, and to give the fans a goal to cheer was a remarkable end to a great run."

On his side's response to early goals conceded: "If you look at the opposition, they are also trying to take things from the game going forward into Tottenham and Man City, two big games. We had to make sure the spirit we talk about on the training ground and have shown in our games was there today, and it was. We can learn from it."

On Akuasi Asante's goal: "He's been out for nine months with an ACL injury, so it was great for him to come back on his third appearance and score. It was a great noise, too, and something we can all ."

If this was against Premier League opposition, Everton would have been hurt a lot more. But they stuck at it and they got there in the end.

They are into the next round and if this is that little bit of confidence they need to go forward this season, they will take it.

It's only a second win in 13 games for Everton, who have ended a run of three consecutive defeats in their past three away FA Cup ties.

It's Leicester City in the Premier League next, on Tuesday.

They owe a lot to goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who denied Tom Eaves with this superb save to prevent a penalty shootout.

A great FA Cup tie. Everton are into the fourth round - but that was tough.

A shock as League One Plymouth Argyle win away at Championship side Birmingham City.

But it was a fully deserved win for the visitors who missed numerous chances in the 90 minutes before it went to extra-time and a brilliant goal from Ryan Law proved the difference.
