Wigan Athletic’s first team players and senior staff have agreed to defer a percentage of their salaries for three months.

A statement says the move will assist the long-term sustainability of the club.

"We thank the players and all staff for their in this challenging time," said executive chairman Darren Royle.

"Our people are still going above and beyond to our community, the NHS and local charities. I am so proud of everyone making such a significant contribution at this time."

Former Liverpool and England goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has been taking time to give some one-to-one advice online to fellow keepers of all ages.

"Last Sunday, I was thinking what could I do this week to help me as well as help other people," he told 5 Live Drive.

"I thought of goalkeeping and put a Tweet out to see if anyone wanted any advice or a chat about it.

"It's been brilliant and I've spoken to some really nice lads. The youngest is four and the oldest is 61. He has had a heart by and has diabetes and has to stay in the house but he was the cheeriest chap I’ve ever spoke to.

"Normally I spend five or ten minutes on the phone but I was on the phone to him for half an hour. He made me smile during these tough times and that is why I did it.

"I’ll try to get through as many as as I can and over the next few weeks I will open it up to help people struggling with their mental health."

Paralympic hopeful Mary Wilson has told BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour that the 12-month delay to Tokyo 2020 could end her Games dreams.

The Scottish Para-bton player has multiple sclerosis and was hoping to qualify for Japan where the sport is making its Paralympic debut.

“A year is a long way away and keeping up motivation is tough,” she itted.

“I have secondary progressive MS so my condition will gradually get worse. In a year’s time I may be in a wheelchair, I could be blind. There are so many different complex issues with MS. I wish I had a crystal ball.

“It is in the hands of the gods as to what happens.”

Golf's PGA tour has announced it will resume on 8 June - but initially without spectators.

It has been suspended since the Players Championship was cancelled after the opening round on 12 March 12.

The first three majors of the year - the Masters, US PGA and US Open have been postponed until later in the year and The Open Championship has been cancelled for 2020.

The first event will be the Charles Schwab Challenge, which is being held in Fort Worth, Texas, between 11-14 June.

The Uefa executive committee will hold a video meeting on Thursday 23 April to discuss the impact of coronavirus on European football.

It will look at developments across domestic and European competitions.

On Wednesday European Leagues, the body that represents Europe's top leagues, said football will "no doubt" return behind closed doors but it is "impossible" to know when that will be.

World Rugby has announced details of a £80m relief fund to assist unions struggling financially because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The fund, likely to be a combination of advances and loans, will be available for Six Nations and SANZAAR unions that require immediate emergency funding, subject to criteria being met.

World Rugby says it is also committed to ing emerging nations and regional associations where required.

“Global sport is facing a crisis never seen before and at this most challenging time we are taking unprecedented action as a sport united to global rugby, its unions, competitions and players through the enormous challenge presented by the COVID-19 pandemic," said World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont.

The end of April will mark three years since Joshua defeated Wladimir Klitschko and called Fury's name in the ring immediately afterwards.

Fury too has brought Joshua's name up time and again between that wonderful Wembley night and his own recent moment of glory in hammering Wilder in Las Vegas.

There is the possibility that both Wilder and Pulev could agree to some step-aside money in order to pave the way for an epic British battle. But getting one fighter to do so is not straightforward, meaning that getting two looks a very tough ask.

So this fight happening next seems to have become a convenient - if tough to fulfil - narrative to maintain momentum during this testing period for a sport on lockdown.

What is becoming clear, however, is both sides and the promotional machines behind them are keen to deliver it sooner rather than later. That will probably not be next but if both Joshua and Fury can keep their belts into the start of 2021 it is beginning to look like the early part of next year could finally deliver that huge bout.

Anthony Joshua hopes he could face Tyson Fury next in a bout for all four world heavyweight titles.

Joshua hopes his proposed bout with Kubrat Pulev - postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic - could be sidestepped and that Fury's third encounter with Deontay Wilder can be shelved in order to pave the way for a huge all-British affair.

"Logically, to prove yourself as number one, I have to fight Tyson Fury. He has to fight Anthony Joshua," said Joshua.

"If you really want to say you're number one, come fight me. Let's get it on. I've got the rest of the belts so it only makes sense.

"I'm the unified heavyweight champion of the world, he's the WBC champion. What will it prove, me and him fighting? There will be one dominant figure in the heavyweight division that will have all of the belts and become undisputed."

"It would be amazing to tell Pulev 'I think it's best if you step aside for now' and to tell Wilder 'we have bigger fish to fry'.

"That fight [with Fury] needs to happen because there will never be another time like this again."

Chelsea will provide 78,000 meals to the NHS and charities ing the elderly and vulnerable groups.

The meals are being provided by the club's catering partner and the scheme will run for six weeks.

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck said: “We are and have always been committed to ing our communities, especially the vulnerable, and at this time we recognise this is more important than ever.

“Our owner, Roman Abramovich, has been instrumental in challenging us to find ways to those in need and after we successfully launched the Refuge campaign and made the Millennium Hotel at Stamford Bridge available to the NHS, this was the priority so I am pleased to see it begin.”

Former Leeds United and England defender Norman Hunter "remains severely unwell" in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus, the club have said.

In a statement, Leeds said: "Norman Hunter continues to battle the COVID-19 virus in hospital and whilst he is, as expected, fighting incredibly hard, remains severely unwell.

"His family would like to take this opportunity to thank all Leeds United ers for their amazing messages and well wishes.

"They would also like to say a huge thank you the NHS doctors and nurses who continue to do an amazing job 24 hours a day for Norman and all of those currently in their care.

"As a club, we would also like to thank our fans, the wider football community and the media for respecting the wishes of privacy from the family at this time.

"We will continue to provide regular updates in the coming days.

Old Trafford will light up in blue tonight as the UK salutes its NHS workers with the weekly 'clap for carers'.

The IPL 2020 season has been suspended until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A statement read: "Due to the evolving global health concerns regarding COVID-19 and lockdown measures implemented by the Government of India to contain the spread of the pandemic, the IPL Governing Council of the BCCI has decided that the IPL 2020 Season will be suspended till further notice.

"The health and safety of the nation and everyone involved in our great sport remains our top priority and as such, the BCCI along with the Franchise Owners, Broadcaster, Sponsors and all the Stakeholders acknowledge that the IPL 2020 season will only commence when it is safe and appropriate to do so.

"BCCI will continue to monitor and review the situation regarding a potential start date in close partnership with all of its stakeholders and will continue to take guidance from the Government of India, State Governments and other State Regulatory bodies."

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha, who now plays for Real Salt Lake in the MLS, says he would refuse to play or train if he felt it wasn't yet safe to do so.

Speaking to the Sport Today programme on BBC World Service, he said: “If someone tells me everything is fine but I still feel that it’s not, then as a consequence I’d rightly or wrongly decide not to go back in that moment.

"Because ultimately we’re going through something now which is designed to limit the spread of the virus itself but if nothing changes but then people say you’re now allowed to train why would you then go and train?

"For as much as we all love the game, we all love our lives more than that itself. Your life extends beyond this career that you do have.

"So I think to be naive in of just trying to get back so that you can play some football, from where I’m at in my life with the interest I have with my three children, my extended family and so on, I’ve got no desire to come back unless it’s the absolute right thing to do and things can be put in place whereby you can guarantee that everybody is safe.”

Premier League clubs will discuss the option of putting a 30 June deadline on the 2019-20 season at a meeting on Friday.

Not all clubs have been involved in informal discussions at this stage but, with a hoped-for May resumption to the season unlikely, club owners are looking at how to avoid potentially difficult contractual situations.

Numerous players' present deals expire on 30 June, notably Chelsea midfielder Willian and Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen.

In addition, Liverpool are due to change shirt manufacturers from New Balance to Nike, while Watford and Newcastle are also changing kit suppliers.

World governing body Fifa are aware of the problem and are looking at alternatives, like rolling contract extensions, with the season currently suspended indefinitely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, legally, players cannot be forced to sign them, raising the possibility of clubs losing key parts of their squad before the campaign has been concluded.

Organisers of the UK's major mass-participation events - including the London Marathon - have launched a campaign to help charities plug an expected £4bn income shortfall.

The 2.6 Challenge aims to get the public to come up with activities to compensate for the cancellation of events because of coronavirus.

It will launch on Sunday 26 April, the original date for the London Marathon.

Cricket Australia has announced it will furlough the majority of its staff on reduced pay until the end of the financial year (30 June).

In a statement, it said: "We have made the decision during this period of isolation, where activity has naturally been reduced, to stand down our people on reduced pay (with the exception of a skeleton staff) effective 27 April ..."

"We will continue to seek advice from medical experts and relevant government agencies to ensure the health and safety of our people, volunteers and communities, and to return to business as soon as possible."

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has been speaking to the Today programme on BBC Radio 4.

Asked if there needed to be a cut-off point for the restart of the season, he said: "No I don't think so. I'm sure that we will adjust accordingly.

"I think for the integrity of the competition and competitions, especially the top end of English football and European football, they'll want to finish the season.

"I believe that there will be an ability next year to adjust, with international breaks, with moving a few games into midweek, and extending the season into next season, that we can and we have that ability through organisation and planning, to finish this season off."
