The Republic of Ireland have to make themselves hard to beat. I am surprised that Liam Scales isn't playing, he should in a back three with Seamus Coleman pushed on into a right wing-back role.

You just have to stay in the game and hopefully cause England problems through a set piece. They will miss Evan Ferguson today but it is understandable that he's not starting given he is coming back from injury.

Stuart Beal-Collins: Loving this line up, leaving Grealish out of Euro was huge mistake, his ball retention and ability to draw two players and make the right to the free player was sorely missed. Show them what they missed. Carsley best of luck.

The noise levels inside the Aviva Stadium are off the scale. England's 3,000 travelling fans to my left are struggling to make themselves heard. What an atmosphere. There's green, white and orange everywhere you look. This is a terrific setting for what promises to be an intriguing battle.

Republic of Ireland can't go toe to toe with England, no chance. If they go too expansive they will get popped off in possession. England have a lot of talent, especially in that front four or five, that can punish you. Be compact and be realistic.

Here come the teams and the Aviva is bouncing. Like properly bouncing.

Who knows what will happen on the pitch, but the atmosphere promises to be very special.

It's the day of new eras dawning, but make no mistake: the Republic of Ireland and England are in very different places.

Of course, there is pressure and noise surrounding England interim boss Lee Carsley, but it is Heimir Hallgrimsson who needs a herculean managerial feat to turn around the fortunes of his team.

While England came agonisingly close to becoming European champions, this Irish team won just 11 games out of 40 under Stephen Kenny.

On too many occasions over the past four years, the Republic of Ireland fans have poured into the Aviva Stadium only to have whatever pre-match optimism they had sucked out of them by ponderous, uninspiring football.

Changing the mood around this team is going to take a heck of an effort from Hallgrimsson. But as we've seen before, he's capable of great things. England can attest to that.

New Republic of Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson to ITV:

"Everything in the build-up has been really good, everything has been professional and the players have been really receptive.

"It's been an enjoyable week with the players and the build-up to the game has been magnificent for me.

"There's a unity within the squad, I think we can make a really strong unit from these players. They would all do anything for the country and the shirt they wear. It will always be collective for a nation like Ireland if we want to succeed and do good things.

Asked if Ireland beating England would be a bigger shock than when Iceland, for whom Hallgrimsson played, stunned the Three Lions in Euro 2016: "Absolutely not, why would that be?

"It's a different kind of quality than when we [Iceland] faced England in the Euros, it's more individual quality for sure, more match-winners in this team - but you can only stop individual quality collectively, working together, we'll try to deny them space and time when they're on the ball."

The FAI took a bit of time to make an appointment and have gone down this route with Heimir Hallgrimsson and you wish him well.

He has a good group of young players who are talented. They need to start qualifying for major tournaments again, that is what the fans are disappointed with and have been for some years.

For the England manager's job there was no one 'in waiting' so to speak. You look at , there was talk of Didier Deschamps perhaps losing his job, if he loses his job then Zinedine Zidane is there in waiting to step in to the role. There was no obvious shoe-in candidate for England to appoint.

This is the perfect opportunity for the FA to look at Lee Carsley. They believe in him, they trust in him, and this is his chance to show on the pitch to the world what he can do.

England fans Thomas and Wayne (right) told me they love the national anthem but said "it's up to him" when asked about Lee Carsley's decision not to sing it.

"Is it really front page news back home">"I don't know about Lee Carsley," he added. "He seems like a yes man like Gareth Southgate. He could be a good choice but I would love to see Pep Guardiola in charge of England."

You look at the games Lee Carsley has in front of him and he has the opportunity to really make this job his own. He is on trial if you like.

Yes he has not really cut his teeth at the very top level of management, in the Premier League for example, but you look at his CV and what he has done, especially in the England [youth] setup, this is a real opportunity.

You look at what Gareth Southgate did and how he came upon the job, Lee Carsley has the same opportunity to take the job as Southgate did eight years ago.

Some of the biggest managerial names in world football have been linked to the England job, but for the next two games at least, Carsley has a chance to show what he can bring to the role.

With qualifying for the 2026 World Cup due to start next March, the Football Association will want to make a permanent appointment soon.

Former Everton midfielder Carsley, 50, will be hoping his brand of football - dubbed "Carsball"- impresses ers and those entrusted to find the right candidate to take England to the World Cup in two years' time.

Despite reaching the Euros final, England's performances in were largely indifferent and the fans want more adventurous football and the team to play with more freedom.

Southgate was appointed Three Lions boss on a permanent basis two months after stepping up from his role as England Under-21 manager.

Heimir Hallgrimsson - who has handled his first few media engagements as Republic of Ireland boss expertly - is cutting a fairly relaxed figure in the summer sunshine as his players go through a fairly high-energy warm-up.

Hallgrimsson watches stoically as the players are taken through various drills before returning to the sideline.

"There is definitely an edge to this game thanks to Declan Rice and Jack Grealish," added William.

On Rice switching allegiance after making three senior appearances for the Republic, William said: "The rules should be changed."

What about Lee Carsley who will not sing the British national anthem?

"He didn't sing the national anthem when he played for Ireland," said William. "If it was an Ireland manager not singing the national anthem I'd be disappointed.

"But there are English-born Ireland players who don't sing the national anthem."

Republic of Ireland striker Callum Robinson says he would be surprised if England's Jack Grealish is not met with a frosty reception from the Aviva Stadium crowd during Saturday's Nations League match.

Birmingham-born Grealish represented the Republic of Ireland at under-age level, qualifying through his grandparents, before switching in September 2015.

Robinson, who is close friends with Grealish, says the 28-year-old will be "expecting" some "abuse" from the Irish fans on Saturday.

"I'd be surprised if he doesn't because I think he gets booed anywhere he goes anyway - even in England," said the 29-year-old Robinson, who represented England at under-age level before switching to the Republic of Ireland in 2018.

"I think he'll be getting ready for a bit of abuse but that's part of it, it's part of the game. He's old enough and with being a senior player now, that stuff's going to come."
