Charlie McNeill had a Sheffield Wednesday debut to with his quick-fire double seeing off Hull City, and sending the Owls into the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The 20-year-old forward, a summer g from Manchester United, scored his first inside the opening minute of the EFL Cup clash.

Marvin Mehlem replied for the hosts in the ninth minute, with McNeill grabbing his second just seconds after Hull’s leveller to put the Owls back in front.

Wednesday, who made 11 changes to their side, were quickest out of the blocks in a blistering opening 10 minutes at MKM Stadium.

It took just under a minute for McNeill to open the scoring on his debut.

Pol Valentin’s cross was touched on by Michael Smith, with McNeill lashing the ball into the back of the net in off the bar.

The goalscorer could have doubled his lead just five minutes later only to see his effort blocked.

Wednesday continued to push for a second, but it was Hull who grabbed the next goal in the pulsating match between the two Championship rivals.

Mehlem grabbed his first goal for the club after the Owls defence failed to clear a Tigers attack.

But Hull City’s joy was short-lived. Goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi had a moment to forget when he got into a mix-up with his own defence – allowing McNeil to roll the ball into an empty net.

Hull responded with their own period of pressure. Tyrell Sellars-Fleming diverted the ball into the net to seemingly equalise for the Tigers in the 17th minute, only for the linesman to raise his flag for an offside.

The high-intensity tie calmed after the break.

There was to be no hat-trick for McNeill, who made way for Bailey Cadamarteri just before the hour mark.

The Owls substitute went close to making his own mark on the match, when he raced down the right, aiming to find Djeidi Gassama and Calum Paterson in the middle, only for his cross to be cleared away.

Marvin Johnson went close for the visitors again in the 74th minute, with his powerful shot going just wide.
