Brentford needed penalties to progress to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday following a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

Kevin Schade gave Brentford an early lead when his effort bounced back to him following a good save from Pierce Charles.

The Premier League side dominated the first half but Wednesday equalised shortly after the break when Djeidi Gassama found the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Both sides pushed for the winner and introduced regular starters from the bench, but neither could find the breakthrough needed to avoid a penalty shootout.

The first nine penalties of the shootout were scored before Mark Flekken saved from Liam Palmer to clinch victory for Brentford.

James Bree scored an 88th-minute winner as Southampton edged past Championship side Stoke City to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Bree struck a shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner after latching on to Kamaldeen Sulemana's .

The Saints had opened up a two-goal lead in the first half when Taylor Harwood-Bellis rose highest in the box to head home from Matheus Fernandes' corner and Adam Armstrong converted a penalty after Jaden Dixon caught Yukinari Sugawara in the box.

Stoke pulled one back on the stroke of half-time when left-back Eric Bocat's free-kick bounced off Sugawara into the path of Ashley Phillips who scored his first senior goal with a brilliant backheel finish.

Junior Tchamadeu's cross was deflected into the path of Tom Cannon who fired into the top corner with a first-time finish at the far post to level the scoring nine minutes after the break.

Southampton boss Russell Martin speaking to BBC 5 Live: "They [Stoke] defended with big numbers and caught us in a moment on a counter-attack and nearly did again later on in the game. So the boys came through the moment in adversity and we won the game with some quality from [James] Bree."

On Southampton's performance: "So many players on the pitch haven't been on their recently, so we have to take into consideration that a lot of players are playing with each other for the first time in a long time.

"I'm really pleased with the character within the group, I learnt a lot about some individuals tonight and we got through it. At the start of the night, it was all about winning the game. it's not easy the cup. You have to respect it."

Mark Flekken was the shootout hero, but he wasn’t happy with the role he played in Wednesday’s equaliser. The goalkeeper tried to launch a Brentford counter attack after catching a corner, but Gassama intercepted his throw and scored.

“At the moment I caught the corner kick I had so many possibilities but I took the wrong one," he told Sky Sports.

“The mistake I made helpd a lot to bring our mental side down. It took away the control we had. It went from a controlled game to an open game. I need to learn from that.

“I went to the wrong side twice at the start [of the shootout]. That doesn't help your confidence in a shootout but luckily I saved the last one.

“It’s not the first and only mistake I’ve made in my career. I’m 31 now with quite some experience, that helps a lot [to come back from] a mistake like that."

Southampton boss Russell Martin speaking to 5 Live about Southampton qualifying for the next round: "It should of been easier than what it was, we were so dominate in the first half and should of gone in 2-0 up so I'm a bit annoyed at that. By the time I left the stands we were 2-0 up and it was 2-1 by the time I got down so I was annoyed and frustrated.

"But I really liked the performance on the whole in the first half. The final choice in of , cross or finish wasn't there. We could of made more of that but we gave them something to hold on to which changed the context of the game."

Football is a funny old game sometimes, isn't it.

I think there's always a little bit of relief if you go through in a penalty shootout. Having said that, the quality of the Brentford penalties were absolutely incredible because every single one of them was struck so well.

Defeats for Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke tonight mean we only have one non-Premier League side left in the competition.

That is Preston North End - and they face a tough ask as they host Arsenal tomorrow.

Sheffield Wednesday were excellent in the second half. I think they upped the intensity and seemed to get a lot more aggressive in the tackle and Brentford didn't have it all their own way. So they were fully deserved to get back into the game.
