  1. Man City 4-0 Newcastle - the fans' verdictpublished at 08:55 17 February

We asked for your thoughts after Saturday's Premier League game between Manchester City and Newcastle.

Here are some of your comments:

    Man City fans:

John: Great performance from the boys, and what a g Omar Marmoush is. At last, someone to help out Erling Haaland up front. Pep Guardiola's gs are usually slow starters but this lad has hit the ground running. I'm not sure it will be as easy against Real Madrid though.

Brian: Wonderful and enjoyable. For the first time in three months we played as a team. Great January transfer business is delivering dividends. Marmoush is a class act if he can find space and ball. Savinho is on fire and Nico Gonzalez is proving to be the midfield general we needed. The confidence is high and this win will add thirst for more. A new set of players are bonding and if we adopt the same approach against Real Madrid, we are most certainly good for a few goals. This was a good day at the office.

Dave: What we witnessed was a sneak preview of what is to come. A few more additions in the summer and I think City will be purring again. To all the Pep doubters... keep watching.

Pat: We made Newcastle look like a mediocre team. So many outstanding performances but I felt John Stones and Gonzalez truly stood out and completely controlled Alexander Isak. Up front, Marmoush and Savinho were superb and had the Newcastle defence chasing shadows.

    Newcastle fans:

Duncan: Alan Shearer called out the Newcastle players a few weeks ago about them only trying in the big games. Well they obviously listened because they don't turn up for them now. Newcastle looked like it was them who were riddled with injuries and played against Real Madrid last Wednesday. That performance was as bad as the half-time entertainment shown during the Super Bowl! If the 'one eye on the final' excuse is used then they need to take a long, hard look in the mirror and question their professionalism. The away ers should be compensated fully for that performance. Disgraceful.

Richard: Brighton, Brentford, Bournemouth, Fulham, West Ham and now City. Games where we just don't turn up. We don't even offer a glimmer of resistance. And they just keep happening. It's worrying. Eddie Howe needs to identify the factors that are causing these performances and sort them out. Displays like this are ruining our season.

Andy: Woeful display. We never seem to make any impact in games unless we come out flying from the start. Looks like our European dreams died on Saturday.

Tom: Abysmal performance from Newcastle United. The players need to forget about Wembley and concentrate on the here and now. To get anything from here all the players had to be at their best. Unfortunately, none of them were. However, all is not lost. Beat Nottingham Forest next week and we'll be right back in it. One positive was the performance of Lewis Miley. Excellent again when he came on.

  2. Guardiola says City have '1%' chance of Champions League progressionpublished at 08:27 17 February

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says his side's chance of progressing from their Champions League play-off against Real Madrid as low as 1%.

City travel to the Bernabeu on Wednesday needing to overturn a 3-2 first-leg defeat at the home of the holders.

It has been a frustrating season for Guardiola's team but an emphatic 4-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday will give them hope.

"Of course this victory helps us, but the margin to win at the Bernabeu from that position, everybody knows the percentage to go through is 1% - or I don't know what, but it will be minimal.

"We will try, that's for sure. We are going like we always have done but, this season, the reality is we have been miles away. We have been really, really poor in performances and results this season.

"For one game, Saturday, we played really good but it's not going to change the opinion, the reality. But, of course, it's better to travel to Madrid with this result."

City led the first leg 2-1 heading into the final minutes before the complexion of the tie changed completely with late goals from Brahim Diaz and Jude Bellingham.

"The chance is minor because the result was not good," Guardiola added.

"Five minutes to go, with 2-1, it would have been different. But, as long as we have a chance, we are going to take it. We'll see what happens."

  3. Newcastle win 'gives us lots of confidence'published at 07:17 17 February

Ederson believes Manchester City proved their quality in their win over Newcastle and says it has given them confidence going into their game at Real Madrid on Wednesday.

"It's really, really important to win the game against big opponents - it gives us lots of confidence for Wednesday," said the goalkeeper.

"This season is difficult. We've had moments - high, down, high, down - and we've had injuries and a lot of games.

"In the bad moments we have to stick together, keep working to get up again and the team proved we have quality and experience for this competition."

The Brazilian got his sixth assist in the Premier League, making him the goalkeeper with the most in the competition's history.

"I'm so happy to mark this history," he said. "Against teams who mark man to man the main threat is goalkeeper.

"I have fast players up front - [Omar] Marmoush, Savinho and Erling [Haaland]. It's so easy just put the ball in the space and see."

Ruben Amorim's injury-hit Red Devils have lost three of their past four league games and drop to 15th - 12 points clear of the relegation zone.

This week, Amad Diallo, their top scorer in the league, was ruled out for a long spell with an ankle injury, while Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer also picked up knocks on the training ground.

With Christian Eriksen and Leny Yoro both missing the match through illness, Amorim was forced to hand veteran midfielder Casemiro his first start since 30 December, and the 32-year-old was often exposed against Maddison, Son and Tel.

Meanwhile, all the players on United's bench, except 30-year-old Victor Lindelof, were teenagers who had not made a first-team appearance for the club.

Amorim did not make a substitution until the 90th minute when 17-year-old striker Chido Obi replaced Casemiro for his United debut.

Still, United had plenty of talent on the pitch and should have equalised when Bruno Fernandes played in Garnacho before the break only for the Argentine to blast well over the bar.

Garnacho had a one-on-one saved by Vicario in the second half, while Joshua Zirkzee headed Noussair Mazraoui's cross narrowly wide from a good position in the closing stages.

    An equaliser wasn't to be.

Defeat was United's 13th of the season in all competitions and their ninth since Amorim took charge in November.

  5. 'Confidence has taken a real hit'published at 19:22 16 February

Matthijs de LigtImage source, Getty Images

Manchester United defender, Matthijs de Ligt to Sky Sports after today's loss: "If you lose it's never enough. We can speak about the personal problems, the injuries, but Tottenham have the same problems. If you lose, it is never enough.

"We played OK and created some chances. But if you lose 1-0, you didn't score and conceded one, so we needed to improve at both ends.

"I think the urgency, the hunger to score, that is something that may be lacking. That's not only on the attackers, it's also on the midfield and the defenders. It's a team thing and we definitely need to improve."

On their confidence: "I think you can say [it] has taken a real hit. Especially in the Premier League, if you lose the confidence you lose the game.

"We still had a starting XI with first-team players. It's no excuse. It's not nice when you lose five players in one week, but that's part of football, part of life.

"I believe you have to deserve fortune. At the moment, apparently we don't deserve it. I don't believe in fortune coming out of nowhere."

  6. 'The place in the table is my worry - I am not worried about me'published at 18:46 16 February

    Ruben AmorimImage source, Getty Images

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has been speaking to BBC Match of the Day after today's defeat: "It was the difference of the game, they scored and we didn't. We had the opportunities. We had situations in transitions, trying to get a result, but in the end they scored and we didn't.

"We want to recover the players, I think we can recover some players for the next game. We have to be together to finish the season and start over."

On the young players on his bench: "It is the hardest competition in the world. I am trying to be careful with them. I felt the team was pushing for the goal and I felt I don't want to change. But they will play.

"You try to read the game, understand what you see in training. The team were pushing for the goal and I didn't feel the need to change.

"I am not worried. I understand our fans, what the media think about it. I hate to lose, that feeling is the worst.

"The rest I am not thinking about. I am here to help my players. I understand my situation, my job, I am confident on my work and I just want to win games.

"The place in the table is my worry - I am not worried about me."

  7. Tottenham 1-0 Manchester United: Did you know?published at 18:34 16 February

Tottenham are the first side to win three separate games against Manchester United in a single season in all competitions since Chelsea in 2012-13. Spurs have also completed a league double over the Red Devils for the first time since 1989-90 under Terry Venables.

Manchester United have lost 12 of their 25 Premier League games this season, their most defeats from their first 25 matches of a league campaign since 1973-74 (13) – when they were last relegated from the top-flight.

  8. Sutton's predictions: Tottenham v Manchester Unitedpublished at 11:02 16 February

    Sutton's predictions graphic

Trying to call this is a bit like a game I used to play with my kids, poker dice, where you roll five dice and it is completely random what you end up with.

This is the first time I have so little idea of what to expect from both sides that I actually think I need to make two predictions, rather than one.

I can guarantee you this, though. Whatever result I go for, it will end up being the opposite of what actually happens.

Tottenham demolished Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford in September but that does not really have any bearing here.

Spurs are getting players back from injury and Timo Werner, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario are among those training again, but how fit are they going to be for this game?

Ange Postecoglou says his players are out on their feet and we could see that in their FA Cup defeat at Aston Villa, so a lot depends on how much they have left in the tank.

As for Manchester United, well I've been reading reports this week that some of their players are unhappy with Ruben Amorim's style of play.

There is lots going on off the pitch too, with stories that more redundancies are planned at the club, following controversy over a rise in ticket prices.

Who would have thought when Ineos completed their deal to take a stake in United 12 months ago that, within a year, they could possibly be as unpopular with fans as co-owners the Glazers are.

In regards to Amorim, I just think he needs time. He arrived in mid-season, he has his way of playing and United will have to give him the players who fit that system, so it might take a window or two before we see him with the team he wants.

There needs to be patience there, but we also know football fans are impatient. They want to see some improvement in the short-term, and it is hard to argue they have made any progress since Amorim took charge.

I still have a sneaky feeling they might edge this game but I cannot really tell you what I am basing that on.

This is a big game for Ange too, now his side are out of both domestic cups, but I am going with United, just.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2 or 4-0 [only 1-2 will count as Chris's score]
