  2. 'Netherlands are world class'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

FT: Netherlands 1-0 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny speaking to RTE Sport:

"I think the Netherlands are a world class team, they are one of the top teams in Europe, we've played them twice, there was nothing in the game in Dublin and nothing here, they had a lot of chances and we relied a lot on last ditch defending and Gavin Bazunu to play well in goal. Ireland have never won an away game against a tier one team in history and it's because it's very hard. It's not easy.

"The players played very well for some periods. We want to eradicate the mistakes. We were desperate to win. It's not easy against a good team like Holland. We've rebuilt a team over the last couple of years because it was needed. There's a massive deficit in Irish football.

On whether it will be the end of his reign: "I really don't know, I don't control that. It is quite possible but I don't know. All I can say is that I see the effort tonight and the level of skill and bravery. It wasn't enough, Holland were better than us."

  3. 'I am disappointed but proud of the effort' - Dohertypublished at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

FT: Netherlands 1-0 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland captain Matt Doherty speaking to RTE Sport: "I was proud to lead the lads out but it was a tough game. We left everything we had out there, things just didn't fall for us in the end. Gavin Bazunu had a great game.

"I think we are playing against a top nation and we weren't quite sure how to stop them. It was still a close game, we were right in it until the end. I am disappointed but proud of the effort."

  4. 'It was very flat'published at 21:49 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

FT: Netherlands 1-0 Republic of Ireland

    Shay Given
Former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper on RTE Sport

The game felt like a testimonial tonight. The pressure was more on the Dutch because we had nothing to play for tonight. It just felt we were going through the motions, it was very flat.

  5. 'One mistake is all it takes' - Bazunupublished at 21:48 Greenwich Mean Time 18 November 2023

FT: Netherlands 1-0 Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu speaking on RTE Sport:

"It was a disappointing night, I think we stayed in the game well but we failed to create any clear-cut chances and we struggled to test them, I think in the moments we are on top we need to create more.

"The goal was a mix-up and sometimes one mistake is all it takes."
