How meditation is a game changer for dealing with change

Living in a world where we’re constantly asking ourselves ‘what’s next">The Music & Meditation Podcast, guest Deepak Chopra shares insights on how to evolve with changes in our lives.

Change is a journey

Realise that change is a journey and like all journeys, there’s a beginning, middle and end. Chopra talks about the wisdom traditions of the East and how the tradition of “grasping and clinging at experiences which are ephemeral, transient and ungraspable” may result in us struggling with change. Realising that experiences we go through will end can bring us relief and help us to navigate changes in our lives more easily.

Meditation can help

Chopra talks us through how meditation can help us understand our experiences to evolve with changes in our lives. Meditation gives us space to focus, allowing us to consider and process thoughts more productively. From physical changes between childhood to adulthood to a change of thought we are all constantly changing. By meditating on questions such as ‘who am I?’ and reflecting on this in a calm and quiet environment, Chopra says we will be left with our ‘unimaginable self’, understanding changes in our lives more fully so we can take steps to manage them in a constructive way.

‘Total Meditation’ can help us deal with change

“Total meditation means to bring presence to every experience,” Chopra explains. “When you bring presence to any experience, it becomes beautiful and it also becomes very loving… When you bring presence to an object, it suddenly appears beautiful when you designate what the object is.” These could be simple objects which we use every day such as a phone or cup of coffee. ‘Total Meditation’ can help us deal with change as it can put objects and people in a positive light. Objects become ‘a piece of art’ while bringing presence to a person can bring ‘love’.

“Total meditation means to bring presence to every experience.”

Let go of experiences

“If you hold on to your breath, you will suffocate. If you hold on to any experience, you will suffer because it is of the nature of arising and subsiding,” Chopra says. One thing you can do to help you to let go of your experiences is to try a breathing exercise. If you’d like guidance on how to do this, listen to the first five minutes of any episode of The Music & Meditation Podcast to be led through a short but effective guided breathing exercise. “Let go and flow,” says Chopra. “By being a silent witness of your breath.” By letting go we can evolve with change by facing the next chapter in our life without burdening ourselves with previous experiences.
