States asked to pay £50,000 for election observers

The States of Guernsey is being asked to pay £50,000 for a team of observers to monitor the general election.

The Commonwealth and Parliamentary Association (A) virtually observed the 2020 general election as Covid restrictions prevented the team from attending in person.

The States Assembly and Constitution Committee (SACC) has asked the assembly to approve paying up to nine A observers to visit Guernsey to supervise the June election.

SACC said the monitoring team "will provide invaluable ... especially as this will be the first time it can be observed in person".

They added the £50,000 cost would be met from the existing election budget, currently showing an underspend.

The proposals will be put before the States this week.

The A said it regularly carried out and ed election observation work across the Commonwealth in order to ensure elections complied with international obligations.

The election has been set for Wednesday 18 June.
